Hello, my fellow crafting friends,
If you have recently found yourself out of work as I have, I do hope you are enjoying your extra time to glue and cut and paint. If on the other hand, you are working extra hours to stock shelves, deliver items or if you work in the health care system or other necessary industries let me just say, thank you.
We here in Colorado have been under “stay at home orders” since March 26th. Which I guess is only a little bit stricter than the social distancing guidelines that we were under before. Still, every day feels Curiouser and Curiouser (if you will forgive the obvious plug for my blog post) and I continue to find myself with more questions than answers. I daresay I am not alone.
Anyhow, and thankfully, crafting is one of the enjoyable activities that we can engage in during this time of social distancing. And so I bring you what I think will be my final craft room makeover project(s).
My first project is this zany cardboard curtain.
I do intend to make the other half of the curtain but it does seem sort of suited to Alice in Wonderland to have only half a curtain doesn’t it? The main components for this project are cardboard, black ribbon, black piping and these oversize pictures from Alice in Wonderland. There are more details on this project in the attached video but I suspect that not too many people are going to follow my silly example of making curtains out of cardboard.
For my second project, I made a bunch of faux pocket watches from round tins and other plastic containers.
A lot of the pocket watches were made out of these plastic Dove containers from the Dollar Tree.
If you like repurposing Altoid tins you will love these too. In some ways they are even better than Altoid Tins. A while back I did a video on 15 ways to re-use these containers. Now I have one more reason to love them. You can check out all the other reasons below.
But I digress. As I was saying I collected all my round containers, glued on some pull tabs, and spray painted them with some silver spray paint.
I resized some Alice in Wonderland watch face art to fit my containers and then glued it to the lids.
The last step was to add a magnet, some chain and a silly tag. Now I have some small “mystery” storage containers on my metal door. 😁 You of course could label them with what is actually inside but where is the fun in that?
For my final project I made some silhouette art from some thrift store frames.
The hardest part was getting the frames apart.
Once that was done I printed my art to the size I needed so that I could make it into a transfer.
It is a simple process all you need is a light source, your art and a pencil lay down a layer of graphite on the back side of the art. Once the graphite is on the art you are ready to trace it on to the base piece. Details for this process can be found in the attached video.
For my background I used scraps of old book paper that were glued with mod podge. Then the art was transferred to my art board and and painted with black craft paint.
I used a sharpie to add the lettering. The frames were painted with some accent colors that I have used in the room and the last step was to reassemble the frame.
You can find a lot more details on how to make these projects in the video tutorial below.
Thanks for stopping by. Stay well and..
Happy Upcycling,
