Custom Bookmarks Made from Aluminum Drink Cans
Step 1 – Prepare Cans
For each bookmark, you will need one flattened can. If you need help breaking down the cans or flattening the aluminum, check the additional video tutorials at the bottom of this post.
Note: You can cover the print, but I prefer to coordinate the can colors with my bookmark art.
Step 2 – Print and Seal
You can design your own artwork for these bookmarks or use my templates at the bottom of this post. You will also need an inkjet printer, waterslide paper, and a spray sealer.
Print your design on inkjet paper.
Add spray sealer
I used four coats, and I didn’t have any problems with the ink bleeding.
Step 3 – Apply Design
Trim out the design and follow the instructions to apply the art to the unprinted side of the flattened aluminum sheet.
The paper I used had me soak the art in water for about 30 seconds.
Then, the paper was easily slid apart and applied to the aluminum.
Once the art was in position, I used a scraper tool to gently push out all the air bubbles and then set the piece aside to dry.
Step 4 – Trim & Tape
To finish the edges of the bookmark, I cut half-inch strips of tape and wrapped them evenly around all four edges.
Step 5 – Emboss
To add some stability and dimension, I used an embossing tool to “draw” a border around the edge.
Step 6 – Finish
I punched a small hole at the top and added a cord with aluminum can accent beads for a finishing touch.
