Hi There,
Welcome to the Lab. If you like to repurpose and recycle old stuff into new stuff then you are in the right place. I hope you will take a look around at some of my other upcycled projects and if you like what you see you can go here to become a subscriber. I send an email when I upload new posts usually once a week.
Do you have some old T-shirts lying around? Did you know that you can make a soft and plushy rug with a custom design with old T-shirts? If you like keeping your hands busy but you don’t know how to knit this might just be the project for you.
The first thing you need is a nonslip rug underlay. I got mine at the dollar tree.
The next step is to draw out the design on the mat. I decided to make a zebra stripe pattern.
Once the design and colors are chosen the t-shirts are cut into t-shirt yarn.
Then the yarn pieces are cut into 3-inch pieces and tied on to the mat.
I worked from the center out to the edges. Yarns are tied on either the horizontal or the vertical direction of the mat matching the color of the line on the mat.
As you add more yarn the design begins to appear.
I added some black fabric to finish off the back of the mat.
The last step was to trim the yarns to a consistent length.
I am planning to use the finished rug as a bathmat.
Of course, it had to be pet approved first. 🙂
You can watch the full tutorial in the video below.
Happy Upcycling,

Is the rug washable?
Hi Kay, I have washed it and it looks great. I would recommend a gentle washer cycle and low heat on the dryer. Thanks for your question.
How long did this take you and what was the size of the finished rug?
Hi Thanks for your question. The finished dimensions are 18″ x 28″. I am not really sure how many hours it took but I did work on it for a couple of weeks for a few hours a day (mostly while watching TV 🙃 ) Thanks again for checking out my post.
To try: pour fabric adhesive onto a plate or saucer & apply to an area of your choice with a small roller or form “brush”.
Hi Pat thanks for your comment.
Awesome project! Could you use a rug hook to get the t-shirt yarn through the mesh, or is the backing too fragile for that?
Hi Sara, Thanks for your question. I am not sure about the rug hook. But it would be worth a try. I was surprised that the mat didn’t break and I did have to pull pretty hard sometimes to get the yarn through. Having said that I don’t think the non slip underlay mat is as strong as the mesh that is normally used for latch hook projects. Hope that helps. Thanks again.
So cute Cindy!!!
Thank you Kimberly.
Thanks Cindy for another great post !
