Upcycled Plastic Bottle Spider – Halloween Decoration Tutorial
Hello,
Our Halloween party is just weeks away and there is much to do. Sometimes I feel like the cleaning alone will take all the time we have. But, I am not the worlds best house keeper so I am still playing around with the decorations.
Guests beware, those might be actual cobwebs on the ceiling. 🙂
If you saw my last post then you have already seen my giant grocery bag spiders web and since every spiders web needs a spider, well that is where we find ourselves today.
This project starting as sort of a hunting expedition were I searched my house for suitable shaped plastic bottles. Here is what I started with.
After taking the labels off and cleaning out the insides I thought I had the beginnings of a spider shape but I wasn’t sure what to do next. My spiders web is outside hence the spider will be too and I wasn’t sure about how well it would hold up if I tried gluing it together. Sooooo………
(If you are afraid of plastics you should probably stop reading here.)
I decided to melt the plastic together with a stencil cutting tool. Yes, it is a little bit smelly, you want to work in a well ventilated area and you might not want to expose yourself to these fumes on a regular basis but if you dare we will continue.
So far so good. But I needed some straws to make the legs. I don’t use straws all that often so I co-opted my unsuspecting friends at the Restaurant / Bar where we watch the Steelers football games. When they were finished with their sodas I whisked away their straws and most of them didn’t even notice.
True confessions, I don’t brag about my trash hoarding disorder to my in face to face friends probably because of the blank stares I usually get indicating there lack of comprehension toward my love of trash. It is just you my on line buddies that I can share that with.
Thank you by the way. 🙂
After some very awkward maneuvering I was able to attach my drinking straw spider legs.
Then I painted a coat of primer paint, covered that with black craft paint, glued on some bottle cap eyes and covered the whole project with a coat of minwax polycrylic.
You can see the whole process in the video below.
Thanks for stopping by and
Happy Upcycling,
I, too, am a trash hoarder Cindy. I look at some things and think about how I know it could be used for something wonderful. The problem is, I usually can’t think of what. Sometimes I find answers on the internet and sometimes not. Glad I have come across you.😊
Hi June,
Thanks for your comment I am always happy to hear from like minded people.
