Hello,

Welcome to the Lab! I can hardly believe it but I have finally finished my craft room makeover and now I have an “official” Upcycled Design Lab. It was a year in the making and no small undertaking but I am so happy with the result. I couldn’t have done it without a lot of cardboard boxes, gallons of mod podge and a few other supplies. It’s quirky and silly and it is a happy place to work.

When I started my room makeover I didn’t intend to get so carried away. The first project was to finish a wall that was missing the drywall and I did it more out of necessity than anything else. But as I cut and glued and nailed away at my wall more and more ideas kept popping into my head. So I made another project and another and another. The room started to become a place that I actually wanted to be in.

Right from the start, I knew the room wasn’t going to be a typical white bright, crisp and clean craft room. It was turning into something quite different. Something quirky and maybe even weird. But my room became something better than typical because it came out of me. At a certain point, it took on an Alice in Wonderland theme. It may sound ridiculous but there were moments when I questioned whether or not some of my projects were acceptable. I know it sounds silly but I did have to remind myself that there really aren’t any rules on what a craft room should look like. Even so, it can still feel a little unnerving to know that gluing a cardboard Cheshire cat to your wall might be frowned upon in certain social circles.

Do you have a craft space? A place to create and call your own? If you don’t have one do you wish you did? Years ago when I was still in grade school we visited some family friends. Their whole house was very modern and fun but the thing I remember the most was the art studio. That was the moment when I knew I wanted a creative space of my own.

If you wish for a craft space I want to encourage you to carve out a little space or a whole room if you can. Make it your own even if all you can have is one small corner it is such a wonderful place to escape to. A place where you can imagine and dream and create.
