Valentine Magnetic Message Board – Upcycle DIY

Hi There fellow crafters,

In this project I am using one of my favorite recyclable / upcycleable items, (rusted tin can lids) to make a valentine magnetic message board. It is a pretty simple project but does take a little time to prep all the lids.

True confessions, part of my process includes an empty coffee can under my kitchen sink were I collect all the can lids as I open and use any canned goods. I know that I like using them in projects and they don’t take up much space. So they are just one of many trash items that are stashed somewhere in our house.

The first step after collecting all the can lids is to rust them. My process for quickly rusting metal can be seen here.

Once the cans have been rusted and cleaned they are ready to be cut. In all of my previous tin can lid projects I have only used straight cuts to make square shapes but for this project I decided to try cutting some curves into heart shapes. It takes a little bit longer but it worked.

If you are interested in my other tin can lid projects you can follow the links below.

Once the shapes were cut I added a little bit of pink and white paint to tint the pieces but not so much paint that it covers up the rusted finish.

To make my Valentine message I stenciled letters on to the individual pieces.

Once the paint is dry a white gel pen can be used to add more detail.

The last step is to seal the pieces and add a magnet to the back.

You can see the whole process and my finished displays in the video below.

Thanks for stopping by. 🙂
