Hi There,
Welcome to the Upcycle Design Lab.
If this is your first visit here I hope you will look around a little and check out some o the other projects you can make from trash and other cast-off items. If you would like to catch up on the other craft room makeover projects you can find all the links here.
My newest projects are these Alice in Wonderland inspired no-sew window shades.
To start this project I measured my windows and ripped up an old sheet to make the main part of the window shades. The next step was to paint the sheet on both sides with a coat of primer paint. It’s a little tricky to paint a sheet but it helps if the edges are all taped down.
After the paint was dry it was time to fold and glue the sides and bottom edge to the finished dimensions that I needed. Once the edges were glued I added the top coat of color on both sides. When the paint was dry I folded the fabric in a 3-inch wide fan fold.
To make the hardware pieces I used some small washers, some brass paper fasteners and some pull tabs from pop cans.
The next step was to mark the curtain and make some small holes and then apply the hardware to the shade.
This is the front piece of the hardware.
And here is what it looks like on the back.
Once all the hardware is in place you can apply the cording and hang the drape but I decided to add some silly quotes to mine first. I used Mod Podge to adhere the letters to the drape.
To hang the drape I ran cording through the pull tabs on the back of the curtain and nailed the drapes into the window sill.
This turned out to be one of my more complicated projects you can find a lot more details in the video below.
Here are the finished window shades. You can see some of my other projects in this picture as well. (cardboard frames, cardboard crown molding and packing paper ceiling that isn’t quite finished.)
Thanks so much for stopping by your comments and questions are always welcome.
Happy Upcycling,
