Hello and welcome to the Lab,
Today I have another project for my craft room makeover. If you missed any of the other projects you can get caught up here. A few weeks back I posted my finished room tour but it turns out I may have a few more projects along the way.
As I said, I thought I was done I really did but I needed a cushion for my chair and I just happened to have an old foam mattress and an idea on how to use part of it. I kind of made things up as I was going along and in the end, my seat cushion turned out very frilly and silly but it was perfect to match my very girly pink desk. And since I don’t think of myself as very girly or frilly it amuses me that I like all this pink.
Maybe it is because everything seems so serious right now. If you are like me you might be wondering how to navigate these uncharted waters. It’s far too easy for me to get caught up in the news and start to worry and wonder what is going to happen next. These are serious times but maybe making something silly and frilly is just what we need to counter all the solemnness.
If you are fortunate enough to have more time to craft right now, I hope you are finding it even more relaxing than normal, an escape if you need one, a place to make something useful or just pretty. A place that brings you delight.
That is how I feel when I am creating, when I have a silly idea in my head. When I can learn new techniques or just experiment. When a project is progressing well or when it takes a wonky but pleasing turn. I delight in the process.
Somedays it feels like I should be doing more, something to help, something important. But I do not know what that is. I do the “right” thing by staying home most of the time and by staying socially distant when I am not at home. I check in with family and friends and try not to worry about things I have no control over.
I am not on the front lines of this pandemic or anywhere near the lines to be clear. I am just one of the countless millions staying home in a world gone mad.
And so I craft.
As I mentioned I had saved our old foam mattress when we replaced it with a new one so I had plenty of foam to work with. The first step was to separate the layers. I don’t know if all of the foam mattresses are like this but ours had three layers to it. So I used a bread knife to gently separate the layers and to cut out the cushion shape once I had traced it on to the foam.
I used some fabric scraps to cover the top and bottom and attached the fabric to the foam with what else but Mod Podge. I mean practically every project in my room used some Mod Podge and one of them even used the plastic bottles so I figured why not try it for this project too?
Once the foam was covered and dry I use my room colors to paint the cushion. I used a light pink for the base and my darker pink to make the Ace of Hearts design.
The sides of the cushion were kind of lumpy and ugly but fortunately, I had some white fringe that I have had for years but never used and it worked perfectly to camouflage the lumpy bumpy sides and to make the cushion just a little silly.
I am really happy with how it turned out. And by the way I am comfortably sitting on it as I write this. 🙂
You can find more details for this project in the video below.
Thanks for stopping by. Stay well.
Happy Upcycling,

Cindy, I love, love, love your chair. It is so you. It fits in with your Alice in Wonderland theme so well. It’s just perfect and looks great. I think the fringe is an awesomely fun addition.
Katie
